31 Days of Horror – Day 3

Standard

The-mutilator-2
Hello everyone happy October. I played a lot of video games today. I also watched three Godzilla movies and wrote the first three pages of my screenplay, Fish. Pretty excited about it.
So today I watched Buddy Cooper’s classic slasher The Mutilator¬†(1984). I got the Arrow blu ray from work, and the transfer is BEAUTIFUL. Anyway, it’s about a guy who comes home on his birthday and finds that his son has accidentally killed his wife. And he goes crazy. Flash-forward to present (the 80s) and the young boy has grown up and he is taking his friends to close up his dad’s beach condo for the winter. So they take the opportunity to spend the weekend. They get drunk have sex and are progressively hunted down and killed by the dad obviously I mean come on.

Overall, this is your typical, run-of-the-mill post Friday the 13th teen slasher. The set up is nice and unique. Having the origin story that this does gives a LITTLE more character to the slasher, and at various points throughout the film the son heavy-handedly talks about how many people his father has “accidentally” killed, despite the fact that his dad has kept photos of the “accidents” and framed them.

You guys should know by now the classic slasher trope of the killer being thought dead, but is in fact not dead, and is now back to shock and take one more teen before finally being defeated. The Mutilator features one of the craziest, funniest, and most memorable uses of that trope that I have seen. Aside from that, the origin, and one particularly disturbing kill, this is a pretty average, fun, dumb slasher. If you’re a fan of slashers, I’m definitely recommending.

I also watched Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000) for the first time and it was FUCKIN awesome. It also features a fun little body horror scene which I greatly appreciated and was not expecting!

Anyway HAPPY OCTOBER.
